Priceless Gifts
by Carol Donihoo Sheffield
November 1962

Christmas comes but once a year.
This is what you sometimes hear,
from those who can't really be living.
People afraid to be loving and giving.
They forget the thought,
look only at the price,
hoping theirs is equally nice.

Yet, I have learned we all possess
priceless gifts we should not suppress;
Never out of style or in bad taste.
What a shame to let them waste.

Take your money and search the land
for a better gift than an outstretched hand.
When there seems no reason to look ahead,
beginning each day with only dread.
When the rain is pouring, no sunshine above,
someone to remind us that God is Love.
Oh, buy me a gift that with love can compare,
endless, beautiful and becoming to wear.

Patience, Understanding, Friendship and Laughter,
give them now and ever after.
Although the value, to some would be lost,
we receive when giving the gifts of no cost.

My life is so full of your gifts in the past,
let's share them this year,
We know they'll last.
